Welcome to my website! It is dedicated to
folk artists throughout Kentucky and the nation. The line between fine
and folk art is sometimes blurry, In simple terms, fine art is based
upon classical (usually European) traditions and created for visual beauty.
It is not utilitarian by nature. Folk art is based upon folk traditions
and usually strives to bring beauty to basically utilitarian items.
Whether you are a fine, folk or blended artist working as a sculpture,
carver, whittler, painter, weaver, or even quilter, this site is for you.
I hope to soon have a blog where we can share ideas and links. I have
quite a few irons in the fire right now, so that may take a while.
I am a Kentucky native. After graduating from Eastern Kentucky
University, I taught Navajo children for ten years in northern Arizona. There I
began painting southwestern landscapes. Returning to Kentucky as a teacher and
training developer for the army, I concentrated on job, home, and children.
After retirement, I again became interested in art, focusing on folk art,
especially wood carving. My wife, Vennie, is a fine artist – and I waver
between folk and fine. Actually, more of a folk artist or artisan since I
love to make utilitarian art..
My artistic interests are rather varied:
- Sculpting (carving) miniatures (less than 8X8X8) in wood and
occasionally terracotta.
- Carving traditional walking sticks of local woods.
- Carving colonial spoons and kitchen utensils
- Giving old canes giving an old friend new life.
- Painting Southwestern & Appalachian landscapes.
- I have recently gotten into oil miniatures (less than 25
square inches 4X6).
See my My Work for more about
my work.
