Colonial Spoons and Utinsels

A local Amish saw mill operator finds me rather amusing when I come out and root through his scrap pile to find interesting 1 bys that I can cut up for my spoons and kitchen utensils such as young suitors would carve to impress their sweethearts.  Lots of folk artists do Welsh Love Spoons.  I don't.  Instead, I focus on the products I think old Abe might have carved for his lady.

Aromatic Cedar is my favorite wood for spoons and ladels.  The flavor does not taint the foods, but is still very nice to smell.  I finish all my spoons and utensils with a blend of beeswax and mineral oil.  The ancient recipe called for walnut oil instead of mineral oil, but it does not last as long.

I also make musical spoons out of cedar.  Each one has a different tone depending upon thickness, depth of spoon, and gap.
